Art makes an extraordinary gift.

It also makes an extraordinary addition to your home. I think people often struggle with purchasing original art. They struggle with the need to justify spending money on “decoration”, something that does not have a utilitarian purpose, like a vacuum or a car.  Yet, all throughout the ages humans have created art, sometimes primitive, sometimes glorious. Never the less we have always had a deep need and longing for beautiful things manifested through art. We have a need to gaze on beauty, to punctuate our daily routine with something that reminds us that despite all the negativity and mediocrity we encounter there is also that which is extraordinarily sublime and good. Art lifts us out of the ordinary.

I think people are sometimes afraid  to invest money to “wash the dust away from their soul” as if they don’t deserve respite from the burdens of ordinary, day to day living or care and nurturing.

Yet we will easily spent money at the spa to relax and “wash the dust away from their soul”, or spend a few hundred dollars to go to a play to enjoy entering another world created on a stage that will transport us out of our own world of troubles for a while, a concert can do the same, so can a gourmet meal or a tropical vacation. But we still have trouble purchasing artworks which can deeply nourish us, and remain with us in the intimate spaces of our homes, long after the experience of the theater, spa or restaurant have faded into memory.

I encourage you to seek out artists whose work touches you, inspires you, brings you joy.

Reach out to them. Talk with them about what they do and what their creative process is. Visit them in person if they are geographically close enough. Don’t be afraid to inquire about the price of a piece you love. Make a down payment, work out a payment plan, or just put it on your credit card and make a commitment to yourself to pay it off over time. Do what you need to do to make art a part of your life.

We need art, we always have and we always will. To live in a desert of mass produced plastic, utilitarian objects is death to the soul. You need to wash the dust from your soul and revive your joy and awareness of goodness and beauty.

If one of my paintings would wash the dust from your soul just let me know. I will do everything I can to help you bring that painting into your life.
