June Evening, a pastel

Just a quick post today to keep you up to date with what's going on in my studio. I struggled through this pastel and finally brought it to a finish late last night after gaining some fresh insight and inspiration after watching a DVD by Richard McKinley. I just love his his method of using  watercolor under paintings for his pastels. That is my next adventure with pastels I think. Although I've used watercolor under paintings  before, McKinley has some particular methods and ideas I really like. I'm also realizing that since I've been away from pastel for about 6 years I'm still painting too tight with them and I'm determined to loosen up in my next few attempts. Oddly, my last two acrylic paintings seem to have tightened up, but I'm pushing for looseness there too. Loose but not sloppy or clumsy. Purposeful looseness countered with just the right amount of detail and always sensitivity, that's what's running through my mind right now.

On Monday I'll have a big announcement so stay tuned!

Beautiful and imaginative colors!
I love your choice of subtle colors in the sky.
I also work in soft colors, but the problem is that I have to work only in daytime to see the painting under natural light. Do you work daytime only or also work at night ?
