About This Painting:
A small plein air study of high tide in the marsh along the Lieutenant River. The beautiful light in Old Lyme, CT has captivated artists for more than a century. The Lieutenant River runs right behind the Florence Griswold Museum, the home of American Impressionism. At the turn of the century artists like Henry Ward Ranger, Child Hassam, and Willard Metcalf were part of the art colony that grew up around Miss Florence's boarding house.
The Lieutenant River is a tidal river and when the tide is in the marsh begins to flood. This little quick study provides a symphony of calming horizontals.
