OK, the photo is not doing justice to this one! It is a serene beauty with lots of thin layers of paint and glaze built up creating a luminous depth of subtle color and light that is both silvery and cool in some places and glowing and warm in others. I noticed this yesterday at the Van Gogh exhibit, I purchased the catalog going in and as I stood there with the original right in front of my eyes I compared it to the large, full color photos in the glossy catalog pages and realized that even the best professional photographers, the best hi-tech camera equipment and a fair amount of photoshop just cannot capture the reality of a painting. Some reproductions are better than others, and I find that sometimes when I photograph my own work certain paintings seem more photogenic and the jpeg looks spot on and other paintings just seem to be camera shy or something lol. So, if you're a fan of this kind of subtle luminous, tonalist painting, reminiscent of Dutch 17th century landscapes filled with silvery light you'll love this one in person.
