I love JMW Turner's work. Ellen's Place is a wonderful resource for learning about Turner and his work. He is often called the first impressionist. When you consider that he was born in 1775 and was painting in the early 1800's you begin to gain an appreciation of his genius and how far ahead of his time he was.

Here are just a few examples of his fascinating works:

Slaveship

The Burning of the House of Lords and Commons

Snow Storm: Steamboat off harbors Mouth

Landscape with Distant River and Bay

Sunsetting over a Lake

If you saw the in progress photo of this painting a few days ago you might never have guessed it would end up like this! It began with very thick impasto work in dark, bold colors. Once that was dry, I added layer upon layer of scumbling in a very dry brush fashion. There is such complex color and texture in this piece I just love it. The atmosphere is palpable (if that's even possible when looking at a painting lol). There is a hazy, diffused, radient light and a shimmer that obscures most details. It's becomes almost other worldly, which is how much of Turner's work strikes me. I'll try to get some detail shots up, as soon as the sun returns and I can photograph in natural light, which will give the best clarity. Enjoy!

Here are the detail pictures as promised:
