I've finally got my head out of the treetops today LOL!! I love oriental things. I find their patterns, and highly stylized designs very appealing. The Impressionists also found oriental art fascinating and it influenced many of them. One reason is because Japan had been closed the the west for so long and no one really knew anything about Japanese culture. When Japan finally opened to trade with the west and things like Japanese woodblock prints became available in Europe the impact was immediate. European artists were suddenly confronted with a whole new wayof visually depicting the world. A flattened sense of space and stylized symbolic brushstrokes were just two aspects of Japanese art that had an enormous influence on western art.
